Child Protection Workshop - Tuesday 28th November 2006

Derek Bray, head of training in Lincolnshire FA, conducted his first Child Protection Workshop in Lincolnshire for newly qualified Referees and some experienced Referees from Grantham and Stamford RA's, including Reg Jackson from Lincolnshire FA.  Sixteen people took an active part in the workshop and benefited from Derek's vast experience in this specialist area.  A fantastic buffet, complete with early Xmas mince pies, provided courtesy of Jim of the Grantham Railway Club, helped sustain everyone through this marathon three hour session.  It was also great to see our friends in Stamford RA visit us, led by Trevor Mitchell, and welcomed, once again, our ever present Lincolnshire FA delegate John Drew.  I am not sure when John actually gets to see his wife Diane these days as his commitment to Refereeing in general is actually first class.

Bill Hannigan concluded by thanking Derek for making the evening really interesting and for passing on his experience to all.  Well done, Derek - a professional job as usual.

John Drew stressed that only those Referees that have attended a Child Protection Workshop, and then received the CRB clearance, will be considered for County Cup appointments.  If you haven't completed the workshop you will need to contact John Drew to find out when and where the next one is to be held.

Referees Course - September 2006

We are delighted to report that all eight of our trainees on the Referees course passed the examinations and are now fully qualified Referees.  In an unprecedented move all eight have now joined the G & D RA, and will become actively involved in Refereeing. It is very encouraging for the future to see that six of these Referees are below the age of 21.  Congratulations to all the candidates and we wish you a successful career as a Football Referee.

Frequently Asked  Questions

How do I become a Referee?
The first stage is to register with your local County Football Association, and find out where the courses are.  Our local County Football Associations are:
Lincolnshire Football Association P.O. Box 26, 12 Dean Road, Lincoln, LN2 4DP
Leicestershire and Rutland County Football Association Holmes Park, Dog & Gun Lane, Whetstone, Leicester, LE8 6FA
Nottinghamshire Football Association 7 Clarendon Street, Nottingham, NG1 5HS
How old do I have to be?
The minimum age for boys and girls to be registered as a referee is 14.  The minimum age for promotion to Level 5 is currently 17.  There is no upper age limit.
Are there any examinations to be taken?
After attending around nine classroom-based training sessions, trainee referees will be expected to pass the Referees Exam - one written (40%) and one oral (60%) - based on the Laws of Association Football. The pass mark is 75%.  This qualifies you to referee local amateur ("parks") football.
How long will it take?
Normally courses are one evening ( approx 2 hrs ) a week for 6 to 9 weeks. Courses can also be run over a weekend or split over 2 weekends - 2 full days are required. In fact courses can be run to suit your requirements.  If you have a group of 6 or more, we can arrange to come to you.
How much will it cost?
Tuition and examinations are free, but there is a small fee for registering with the County FA (£30 Adults, £10 Juniors). Costs include all the text books that you will require. This fee may be reclaimed by those who successfully complete the course and then referee ten 11-a-side games in over-16 aged football.
Is there a career progression?
Yes, after passing the Basic Referees Course, there is a career progression no matter what age you come in to the Refereeing fraternity, regardless of Gender, so why not aim for the top...
International Top of the tree is the International List
Level 11 Level One referees are on the National List of Referees (Premier League, Football League). Lincolnshire has two on this list: Neil Barry & Gary Sutton.
Level 2 Panel List Referees (Football Conference, Football Combination, Central League).
Level 3 Semi-Professional (or contributory) league level (Unibond League, Ryman League). Our own Martyn Short has been at this level for a number of years, and next season Andrew Green will be officiating at this level.
Level 4 Refereeing in a senior amateur league at county level or Supply League (United Counties League), and being an assistant referee at contributory league level. G & D RA has Anthony Howitt officiating at this level.
Level 5 Senior County Referees. This classification includes referees who have served at a higher level.

Those wishing to progress to this level will need to be assessed on at least 3 matches, attend further training, successfully complete a test on the laws of the game, have a satisfactory average mark over 20 completed matches, and complete a season at Level 6.

Level 6 County Referees.

Those wishing to progress to this level will need to be assessed on at least 3 matches, attend further training, successfully complete a test on the laws of the game, have a satisfactory average mark over 20 completed matches, and complete a season at Level 7.

Level 7 Junior Referees not in Level 8 or below
Level 8 Youth Referee. Referees who qualify but have not yet reached the age of 16. On reaching 16 the referee will immediately move to level 7.
Level 9 Trainee Referees -Referees who have participated in the two-tier training programme and who need to register in order to be covered by public liability insurance. On qualifying the referee will immediately move to level 8 or 7 as appropriate.
Level 10 Declared non-active Referees. This also includes Assessors/Instructors/Examiners/Former Referees who now pass on their experience to others.

To help you progress up this ladder the are a number of "in-service" training courses that you will have to attend, and to get to Level 4 & above you will need to pass an annual fitness test.

What about Child Protection?
All Referees affiliated to Lincolnshire FA will have to undergo an FA Child Protection Workshop, or complete the FA Child Protection Test, and then be cleared to work with children through a Criminal Records Bureau check every three years.
