| It had to happen someday and who better
to lose to than the sporting, spirited team of Barrowby Cricket
Club. On Thursday night our cricket team came close to retaining
their 100% record, but with 2 balls to spare Gavin Green hit a boundary
off his cousin Andrew to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat,
winning by 1 wicket. G & D RA batted
first and lost an early wicket with Simon Hannigan going in the
first over, but then his father Bill, Andrew Green and the Captain
Adey Johnson quickly reached the tally of 25 which led to their
early retirement, and then despite some resistance by Colin Pound,
John Morrissey and Nigel Burton the runs dried up and the wickets
fell. G & D RA reached a credible 128 off 20 over's.
It did take an exceptional performance by Barrowby, with a mixture
of youth and experience, to clinch victory. Ivan Thorpe,
the Barrowby Captain, was a master tactician in putting his young
batsmen in first and losing early wickets to Bill Hannigan, Lee
Turner and the surprise package of Nigel Burton who at one point
was on a hat-trick. Rumours are, that his dubious wide way
down on the leg side was a deliberate act just to avoid buying
the team a round of drinks. It looked like victory to G
& D RA until Simon Sackey and Gavin came to the crease.
Craig Davenport was superb in the field, but took the brunt of
the onslaught when bowling, and then with confidence high Gavin
dispensed Andrew for a number of boundaries to clinch victory.
There were many performances of note, particularly
from the young players of Barrowby (Matt & Jake), the family
Jepson's Paul & son Sam, and Ed Jepson for G & D RA, but
the youngest G & D RA player, Connor Morrissey
aged 11, delighted the crowd both in the field and at the crease...
so much so that he had to put in a cameo performance with the
bat for Barrowby.
Our thanks go to Ivan and his Barrowby team for
hosting us, and for putting out a balanced side to make this a
competitive but very sporting occasion. Well done,
Barrowby. See the score
