Sutton Surprise & Sunday Shocker
County Cup Final Appointments 2007

Anthony Howitt had a delightful surprise when being appointed as 4th Official in the County Senior Cup final, Lincoln City v Scunthorpe United, along side Gary Sutton in the middle.  Mick Massingham was in shock at being appointed 4th Official in the County Sunday Cup final; "At my age I was expecting something like the U12s or U16s!" he said, which, in advertently, took the gloss off Bill Hannigan & Tony Sharrock's Assistant Referee appointments in the U16s and U14s respectively.  Steve Beswick was made up at being appointed as the Referee for the County U16s Girls final, and Nigel Burton & Simon Carter will be wearing matching outfits as the Assistant Referees for the County Women's Cup final.  Have a great day lads, and congratulations on your appointments.

Saturday League will need a new Chairman

The Chairman of Grantham Saturday League, Les Burrow, has signalled his intentions to stand down at the next AGM.  Brenda and Peter Sharp also announced that they will be standing down from their positions as Secretary and Treasurer.  All three have provided excellence service over many years to the League and football in general and will be hard acts to follow.  Any one wishing to be considered for the vacant positions should contact Les Burrow on 01476 570520.

Hello, Hello, Hello, What's going on here then?

Ex Police Constable Keith Noble, our new Vice-chairman, gave a brief run down of his career and experiences whilst serving with the Metropolitan Police Force from 1952 - 1960, during our February meeting.  Keith's "patch" was in the biggest police station in England, Saville Row, roaming the streets covering Soho and Mayfair in the West End of London, armed only with a note-book, whistle and truncheon.  This in the days when beer was still being delivered by Horse & Cart and police accommodation cost 12.5p (half-crown) a week.  After two years on probation Keith then spent 4 years on traffic duty driving a Wolsley 680 (top speed 85 mph and a dream to drive) and a year in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Keith, everything you said was "taken down and used in evidence" of a really entertaining evening; thank you!

Mal's Minutes

Take a few minutes out to read an interesting Time Keeping article by Mal Davies (Birmingham)  the former Editor of 'The Midland Referee' which he edited for 34 years. He now produces his own newsletter and writes the Ask The Ref column in Fulham's match day programme.

You're having a laugh Ref!

Masochist
My son was doing his homework. "Dad what's a masochist?"

Dad: "Someone who gets pleasure from suffering pain".

Son: "That's no good Dad, it has to be only one word".

Dad: "Referee"

Assessor Tips
"I just don't understand it" the referee complained to his assessor. "One match I do very well, then the next match I'm terrible, and that's what you saw today".

" Well" said the assessor helpfully, "maybe you should just do every other game".
