Quiz
Night – Great Success! Nineteen
teams took part in the Associations’ Annual Charity Quiz run as usual by
Keith Noble on Friday 9th February 2007. What a
turn out – thanks to everyone supporting this event, and even more
importantly raising a lot of money for charity. Regular
contestants were dreading some of the questions that Keith would pose as
he has recently been a convert to the Web. The the top three
were:
| 1st.
Acme Thunderer |
112 points |
| 2nd.
Top
Banana |
102 points |
| 3rd.
To be
Inserted Later |
101 points |
Successful
nights like these have people working hard behind the scenes as
our Chairman, Mick Massingham, reiterated on conclusion of the
quiz. Our thanks go to
Keith “Quiz Master” Noble, his wife June and Sue Larkin
for being the marks women, Pete Sharp and Nigel Burton
for running the raffle, and finally, a big thank you to
Grantham Railway Club for letting us have the use of their
facilities and the hard working Paul Ledenham
who ensured that drinks flowed freely. |

Peter Jones, Customer Relations Manager at Leicester City and a former FIFA Referee & Premier League match official,
came to
speak about his experiences at our meeting on 25th January 2007.
Peter is also a UEFA observer / assessor and has had numerous high profile Referee appointments which
include:
FA Cup Final 1999 Man Utd v Newcastle Utd
Coca Cola Cup Final 1998 Chelsea v M'boro
Charity Shield 1997 Man Utd v Chelsea
Peter had the whole audience in the palm of
his hand, laughing at the hilarious incidents and jokes, and in
total awe of his knowledge of the top Referees and his
refereeing experience. The highlight of the evening was
the passing around of the FA Cup medal which he did manage to
get back, eventually. It is a rare talent for someone to speak
for an hour unscripted without loosing the audience. Peter
was a close friend of Martyn Short's; his trip was in tribute to
our former Vice Chairman and it was really appreciated by all.
Thank you, Peter and hope to see you again soon. |

Neale Barry the legendary
Premier League referee, and now of The FA, came to G & D RA to give an update
from the FA on refereeing matters, and talk of his experience as a
premier league official at our meeting on 31st August 2006. It was
good to hear that Neale is getting the FA to adopt a more professional
and practicable approach in the Training & Development of future top
level Referees. Well done Neale, everyone who attended enjoyed the
insight you provided. |

Lincolnshire Youth Games 2006. Three Referees from
Grantham volunteered to help at this years games held at the Meres
Stadium, Grantham. The Football Festival, aimed primarily at Girls
in Year 4/5 and Boys with disabilities, was a huge success. The
standard of football on display and the enthusiasm of the participants
was fantastic, and the support given to the officials by Sarah Teal,
Derek Elmhirst and Stacie Neal was superb. The boys in black
(actually purple on this occasion) were Nigel Burton, Bill Hannigan and
Pete Preston. |
